Volunteers at Hearts for the Homeless

Hearts for the Homeless of Western New York, Inc. was founded in 1990 by Ron Calandra, a Christian missionary. It was established in Buffalo, New York, where its headquarters stand to this day.

This non-profit foundation maintains a mobile soup kitchen offering food, winter clothing, and information about area services to the impoverished and homeless. Its programs and operations rely on volunteers.

This foundation is a member of the Western New York Coalition for Donated Goods, a group that seeks to educate the public on the importance and benefits of recycling and item donation. As such, Hearts for the Homeless splits all earnings from Coalition-sponsored events with the other members of the collaboration.

In August 2019, the foundation began the construction of a food pantry, which is also planned for use as a café, ministry campus, and can and bottle recycling center.

Hearts for the Homeless currently has over 400 bins stationed in Western New York. These bins are of a distinctive red color and equipped with Enevo sensors.

Donors can locate nearby bins using the bin finder on the foundation’s official website. Schools wishing to sponsor donation bins may contact the foundation through an online form.

The foundation also runs the Hearts Thrift Store, which is located on Tonawanda St., Buffalo, NY.

Donations must be dropped off at the designated bins; no pickup services are available.

The foundation’s operations are concentrated in Western New York which is houses one of the largest numbers of clothing donations bins in the country.
